Negotino

The territory of the community Negotino covers an area of 413 km 2, determined by which it is part of the large-area communities in the Republic of Macedonia. The town is situated in the Middle Povardarie, on both sides of the river Vardar, and takes up a significant area in the Tikvesh Valley. Great amounts of water had flowed through the riverbed of Vardar, the river had changed its course numerous times, and the settlement Negotino had been built and destroyed, but it always, as though phoenix rose from the ashes, renewed. The inhabitants of this town, witnesses of its long lasting history, have transformed nearly all of the events of significance to the town, into poems to be told and retold, not allowing them to be forgotten.

According to the geographic conditions, there are no mountain villages in this community, but nine lowland villages and three hilly settlements, which is convenient for a more modern infrastructure of the settlements. The total agrarian area takes up 48.997 ha of the territory of the community Negotino.
The arable soil takes up 21.971 ha or 44.7%. The grapevine is the most widely produced agricultural product.
This region is renown for the famous sorts white and red wine, which are regularly placed on the European and world markets. Negotino processes 45-50 million kilograms of grape per year.

History of the production of wine in the Povardarie Region

Whenever mentioning the Winery "Povardarie", the first thing that comes into mind is the excellent quality of the grape and the exquisite wines produced here following the ancient tradition. This region as though it was created for growing grapevine, proof of which are the numerous archeological excavation sites which speak of a past of grapevine growing and wine production in this region. The climate and the soil are ideal for the production of grapes and for the wine industry. Maybe for that reason, the Antic Romans and the Antic Slavs made the most of that privileged gift of nature.

Here, in the abundant in sunshine Macedonia, the temperature during the summer reaches up to 40 C°, and, in addition to that, this region has the lowest percentage of rainfall. That kind of climate is highly suitable for the production of grapes with optimal quality and with the highest possible percentage of natural sugar.
